How to fight diaper rash

Oh, that stubborn diaper rash!

Being a new parent, you might have gone out, read the reviews on all the diaper products and wipes and have chosen the ones you think are perfect for your baby. No harsh chemicals, all natural, water wipes, for super sensitive skin… the list goes on. You clean your baby perfectly, change the diaper often and then one day you go about your diaper changing routine and OH MY GOSH, there is this red, irritating, little rash starting to evolve. How could this have happened?!?! I have never seen this before! All the products I purchased said this would not happen to me!

I am here to comfort you that most (probably all!) parents have experienced this, and you are not alone.

Hopefully it doesn’t get to the point of having to have a quick visit with your doctor, so I am going to give you a couple tips to be proactive in this situation. I am also happy to tell you that the diapers and wipes you use are probably fine.

The biggest tip I have for you is to dry, dry, dry and then dry that baby bum some more! Diaper rash feasts on the dampness so even if you dry it and put a diaper on with no barrier on the skin, it is going to get damp again very quickly causing irritation.

You can air dry, which is easier when baby is little and not so wiggly and mobile. Play with them for a couple minutes or read a book and usually a minute or two will be enough time. If your baby is anything like mine, as soon as I finish the drying process a little accident might happen, and I am starting all over with a new diaper. This can be a bit time consuming or very difficult if you have a toddler on the go.

As a little trick, we keep a hair dryer beside the change table and use it only on room temperature mode to speed up the drying process. I usually do this for 15-30 seconds and then (especially if there’s diaper rash already), I use this amazing baby diapering salve called Bum Bum Balm by Dimpleskins Naturals . The salve acts as a barrier to keep the dampness off. I especially recommend using the Bum Bum Balm before bedtime so that no dampness builds up overnight on the bum. This has been a life saver!

The Bum Bum Balm is included in the 4 and 6 Baby Box subscriptions, the Ultimate First Year Baby Box, the Ultimate 0-6 Month Baby Box or the Ultimate 6-12 Month Baby Box.
